Employee Benefits

A happy crew is a good crew! We strive to meet the needs of our employees. We realize the importance of mutual respect between employer and employee. We offer a few extras that are above the norm. Content employees are retained and are more productie. treating your employees well is also the right thing to do.  We realize the importance of maintinging mutual respect between management and employees, and strive to make their employment here a positive experience.  Many of our employees have worked for us for several generations. Some extras that we provide that many farms do not include the following.

  • Housing: We provide housing for our seasonal harvest employees. If they provide their own housing, they receive a housing allowance.
  • Daycare: We developed a licensed non-profit 501c3 Daycare, "The Berry Good School," for our employees. It operates year around and is licensed for infants through age twelve.
  • Garden Spot: We have a buffer zone between our raspberry field and the Skagit River. This area serves two purposes: one is environmental, and the other is that it allows a garden site for our employees. They grow corn, peppers, and a few other vegetables.
  • Covered Picnic: We put in a covered meeting/picnic area and an outside basketball court in coordination with Tierra Nueva (a local Hispanic ministry and advocate organization).
  • Playground: We installed playground equipment from Burger King, and a lawn for soccer and volleyball. A church group installed an additional playground set. The combined picnic area and play areas make for a parklike atmosphere.
  • Training: We provide safety training and some additional training for our employees.

Employee History

We at Skagit Growers, a division of Mike & Jean’s Berry Farm, realize that producing a high quality product such as our Cascade Snow Cauliflower requires team effort. Without our hardworking, loyal employees it would be difficult to ensure the same quality cauliflower that we are able to produce today. Our workers are an important part of our operation and we appreciate their continual commitment to our farm and the quality products that you, the buyer, receive.

We pride ourselves as a family operation and are pleased that many of our families of workers have been with us for several generations. The majority of our workers originate from southern California and northern Mexico. They travel north each summer to escape the extreme heat that so often accompanies the summer months.
